About Les Gets

ABOUT OF LES GETS

The traditional alpine village of Les Gets is situated between Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc and is a one hour drive from Geneva airport. At an altitude of 1172 meters with skiing up to 2460 meters Les Gets is one of 12 ski resorts making up the huge ski area of The Portes du Soleil. Les Gets has a fabulous 'winter wonderland' feel during the winter season, with twinkling Christmas lights, flood lit pistes and an outdoor ice skating rink in the town hall square. Each evening bustles with life - children playing in the snow and adults enjoying the après ski and boutique shopping! Voted as the number one family resort by many newspapers, gaining the 'Family Plus Mountain' Award that guarantees a welcoming environment for children and a fantastic snow record, Les Gets is the ideal place for families and friends to experience the best ski holiday possible.

In summer an exuberant alpine feel with luscious green hills and a large array of flowers and wildlife replaces that 'winter wonderland' feel. Business goes on as normal with traditional restaurants to try and the stunning backdrop of Mont Blanc to admire. With an 18 hole golf course and a huge array of activities, Les Gets is a great adventure holiday location.

LES GETS HISTORY

Les Gets retains its traditional Savoyard mountain village soul and a heritage that brims with historic and cultural riches. The name of the village refers to the channels (gittes or giettes in the local dialect) in the forests that were used to send logs rapidly down the hillside during logging work. Les Getois (the locals) hold a strong bond to their Savoyard heritage and this makes Les Gets such a uniquely attractive and friendly place to visit. Les Gets opened its first chairlift in 1938 and started to develop tourism. The French Ski School ESF originated in Les Gets with its first ski school opening here in 1940. The quality and diversity of the skiing in Les Gets is enough to bring a smile to anyone's face.

LES GETS SHOPPING AND FACILITIES

Les Gets has a central shopping street that offers an array of boutiques and outdoor shops, as well as a selection of bars and traditional restaurants. On Thursday mornings there is a market selling local produce and souvenirs and there are two supermarkets, banks and a pharmacy/ perfumery. Typical French bakeries sell freshly baked bread and cakes and the town brims with Savoyard shops that sell local cured meats and cheeses.

LES GETS RESTAURANTS.

Our chef has one night off per week that gives guests the opportunity to indulge in one of the many restaurants in Les Gets. From Indian restaurants to traditional Savoyard restaurants, there is an abundance of choice for an enjoyable evening out.

Typical local dishes:

  • Fondue: melted cheese with white wine and garlic, served over and burner with bread and cold cured meats
  • Pierre chaud: The 'hot rock' is a choice of finely sliced raw meats (beef/duck/veal/bacon) that you cook yourself on a heated stone. Normally served with salad and potato gratin.
  • Tartiflette - a medley of cheese, potato and lardons. Reblochon cheese baked in the oven with sliced potato, lardons and onion.
  • Raclette - Raclette cheese melted with boiled potatoes and cold cured meats.

A few of our favorite restaurants:

  • Choucas - situated on the main street it is a typical French family restaurant with many Savoyard specials.
  • Le Tyrol - Fabulous open fire grill with delicious steaks, traditional dishes and wood oven pizzas. Hot rock is recommended!
  • Le Flambeau - A small French restaurant serving traditional French cuisine.
  • La Taniere - opposite the main ski lifts with an extensive out door area with gas heaters, this restaurant makes a great meeting point. Wood oven pizzas and daily specials are favourites.
  • La R'Mize - A very small restaurant run by a local couple with a lovely atmosphere and tasty traditional recipes. Booking definitely advised!
  • La Case K2 - A small Canadian restaurant that serves all organic and natural foods with local produce. Fantastic burgers and savoury crepes!
  • Mammas - Located in the Boomerang Hotel and run by Aussie Jean Michel, Mammas has a great relaxed atmosphere in the wine and tapas bar, and a more lively atmosphere in the main bar and restaurant area with weekly live bands. Delicious cocktails and excellent value meals, I recommend the ribs and sweet potato wedges!
  • Bombay Ski Club - Finally an Indian restaurant has landed in Les Gets! Maybe not a normal mountain meal option but the curries are home made and delicious.

Takeaway options are available from most restaurants if guests prefer to stay in, ideal for families with young children.

BARS AND NIGHT LIFE IN LES GETS

A few favourites:

  • Bar Bush - run by a very friendly Englishman (known as Cindy) Bar Bush has a great après vibe. A Friday night quiz and themed nights ensures the bar is bustling and the beer is flowing. I recommend the Prosecco.
  • Bar Boomerang - A great bar that serves cocktails, beers and has an extensive wine list. Weekly live bands and late night BBQs ensure the place is popular!
  • The Irish Bar - Great atmosphere and music play lists, they also sell home brewed beers that are created in the microbrewery at the back of the bar!
  • The Canadian Bar - run by Antoine, a French Canadian, this is a cosmopolitan bar with a huge international clientele and a comfy outdoor terrace. Great for a few games of pool or darts!
  • The Bowling Bar - French owned bar that has 2 bowling lanes for some late night competitions.
  • The Igloo Nightclub - Les Gets' one and only night club - for the late night drinkers and dancers.
